✍️ Five Tips to Being More Consistent
⚡️ Questions to ask yourself if you are having a hard time reading your Bible
3 Minute Story
Feeling lost is not a fun feeling. There’s nothing scarier to me than feeling lost when I am driving or heading to a new city. The worst part of learning to drive was trying to figure out where to go using MapQuest back in the day. Feeling lost in life is a similar feeling.
I go through seasons feeling like I am lost. I don’t know if I am the only one. The question of “who am I” or “what am I doing here” crosses my mind often. I would describe myself as a pretty decisive person, but there are times when I can feel myself bend and mold to the opinions of others around me. I have come to realize there is one reason or factor that this happens to me.
It has to do with reading my Bible.
If I am not spending time in God’s Word I can feel my life move with the tide of life. Other’s opinions and thoughts start to frame mine. I feel more confused on how I should live.
BUT when I am spending time in God’s Word, I can feel His words protecting my heart.
The biggest reason I need God’s Word in my life has to do with the people I am interacting with. I am surrounded by many people who are Christian or claim to know Jesus. I think many in the Christian community can relate to what I am about to share. As a woman, I never want to just take someone’s opinion as truth. I want to continually check it. I have needed to check others in my life who will share what they believe the Bible says but is totally clouded by their culture, context, gender, and lack of understanding about the Bible. Things like gender roles, women’s place in the world, authority… Are huge theological perspectives that space how we function as a family, how I make decisions about my life, and how I view my husband and I’s partnership.
What we believe about the Bible, family and God impacts our day to day whether we realize it or not. And this is why I don’t want to be reading other people’s thoughts on the Bible. I want to study the Bible for myself.
I’ve been doing this for as long as I can remember and I am STILL learning about who God is, how He’s created me, and my purpose in the world. And at the same time, the more I learn about who God is through the Bible, clearer I see my life. I am no longer lost; I am found.
Five Tips to Being More Consistent
Creating consistency in your daily routine is essential for achieving long-term goals and maintaining productivity. Reading your Bible on a more consistent basis is a great habit to add to your life. We never want to read our Bible to come from a place of “have to” or a way to feel “ok” with God. It can be a healthy coping skill when used in a healthy way. Here are a few tips to help you build and sustain consistent habits:
Tip #1:
Set Clear Goals: Define what you want to achieve on a daily, weekly, and monthly basis. Clear goals provide direction and motivation. An example would be reading three chapters a day or a book in a week. I use The One Year Bible. It’s a way to read the Bible in a year. You can read a part of the Old Testament, the New, Psalm, and Proverbs.
Tip #2:
Create a Schedule: Plan your day in advance. Allocate specific time blocks for different tasks and activities, ensuring that you stick to your schedule as much as possible. I use a planner that has an hourly break down of my day. This helps me picture what I am doing in my day and see when I do have space to pray and spend time with Jesus.
Tip #3:
Start Small: Begin with small, manageable tasks that you can easily incorporate into your daily routine. Gradually increase the complexity and duration of these tasks as you become more comfortable. Start with one verse a day. Go up from there. I would like to add more studying with a commentary into my routine. I would never open my Bible if I tried to study and make complicated notes right away.
Tip #4:
Use Reminders: Set reminders on your phone or use a planner to keep track of your tasks and deadlines. This helps you stay on top of your goals and habits you are trying to build into your day. If you know around the time you are able to read your Bible set an alarm on your phone.
Tip #5:
Reward Yourself: Celebrate your achievements, no matter how small. Rewards can motivate you to maintain consistency and make your routine more enjoyable. Buy yourself a new Bible highlighter, a new devotional, tell a friend what you’ve accomplished.
If this was helpful take some time to share.
1 Journal Prompt:
If reading your Bible is difficult for you right now, ask yourself these questions:
What is keeping me from wanting to hear from God?
What would I rather be doing?
What in my schedule is keeping me from being consistent?
